My daughter purchased an Envy 4520 and has set it up to print remotely from the family’s HP laptop s and 3-IOS iPads. I recommended that the printer be set up to print in draft mode to save on ink, since the printer would be used for personal use and not for professional documents. But since the printer setup was completed, the owner’s manual was placed in a safe location. The location is so safe that my daughter does no remember where she placed it and can not be found. Could someone instruct me on how to configure the printer to print in draft mode or refer me to a HP Document that will instruct me on how to configure the printer.?
thank you in advance,

I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to know how to print in draft mode.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
Please follow the below steps to set the printer to print in draft mode.
- Open the Control Panel and select Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the shown HP printer and select Printing Preferences.
- Within the Paper/Quality tab set the print quality as required, then press OK and the selected settings will remain as defaults.
Please refer to the below user guide for your printer for more information.

The_Fossette,
Thank you for responding to my query. I replied to your email, but am not sure if you will respond to that. I needed some clarification to the directions you provided. I went to the printer to follow the steps below “Please follow the below steps.....tp print in draft mode. -> there were noDevices and Printers option to select. I guess my concern is whether I am in the proper location. I was able to,locate a Settings icon on the Control Panel, bu I fat finger an option while trying to scroll down the list. So I stopped.
i hope you will still assist me,

I read the quick update. Thanks for responding. Your time, patience and efforts are truly appreciated. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 As @The_Fossette is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf.
Are you printing from the notebook or your iOS devices?
If the notebook has WindowsOS installed and you are printing from the notebook then follow these steps:
- Right-click the start button.
- Then left click on search.
- In the search box type printers
- Then left click on printers an scanners option
- Right-click the shown HP printer and select Printing Preferences.
Now look for the default printer.
- Within the Paper/Quality tab set the print quality as draft mode, then press OK and the selected settings will remain as defaults.
For further assistance please check these printer settings link:https://hp.care/2Jum9C3 (HP Printers - Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)
Check the option under the section "Print quality and improvement settings"
There is a draft mode option for you to change.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

David SMP,,
I wrote a reply via your email reply, but I am not sure if you will respond to that. I have a question to your and The_Fossette’s recommendations. Both of your recommendations started out with a similar phrase staring:
If the notebook has WindowsOS installed and you are printing from the notebook then follow these steps:
- Right-click the start button.
- Then left click on search.
- In the search box type printers
- Then left click on printers an scanners option
- Right-click the shown HP printer and select Printing Preference
Please correct me if I am incorrect with my statement, but I am assuming that the above steps are executed by attaching a computer to the printer as done before wireless connections became a reality. If Ithis statement is true, it would have helped in in trying to resolve my issue. I have a HP Envy 5532 Printer that is over two years old and is set up to print in draft mode. I do not remember having to connect the printer to a computer to enable the draft mode option. I thought I used the Settings option on the printer’s Display screen to enable the draft mode.

I have read the post comprehensively. Thanks for the update. Please ensure that the steps are followed to the "T" Any printer settings in this world can change on the computer or modified by some kind of a Windows or Software update relating to the printer. It happens in the background without your knowledge.
This is irrespective of a wired, wireless or USB connection.

DavidSMP,
I am just trying to to figure out if I am to use a computer (laptop) attached to the printer to execute your steps as outlined because of the terminology you used,, ie. “left click, start button”. Unlike my kids, I use a Mac and when I configured my Envy 5532, I did not connect my iMac to the 5532 to configure the printer to print in draft mode.
i appreciate the time and effort that bold you and The_Fossette provided such detailed steps to resolve my issue, but if indeed your steps require me to connect a computer to the printer, a simple “Connect computer to a printer is required to perform these steps”.
i am sorry to keep bothering you regarding this issue. Please know, I did read your recommendation get word for word and I thank you very much for assisting me.

Thanks for the reply.
It looks like you were interacting with @The_Fossette and @DavidSMP, but they are out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.
I'm Raj1788 & I'm at your service.
Could you please help me with the operating system of your computers you are using?
If you are using a MAC please follow the below steps.
Step 1: Remove the printer from the printer list
-
Search the Mac for Print, and then click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners in the list of results.
-
Find the printer names that match your printer from the list of devices.
Figure : Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of a printer in the list
-
If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button
at the bottom of the list. Leave one 'idle' printer in the list that matches your printer if available and use this printer as the Default printer.
-
Try printing again.
-
If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.
-
If the printer remains offline or displays an error, continue to the next step.
-
Step 2: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer
Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.
-
Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.
-
In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button
to delete it.
-
Click the Add button
.
-
Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.
NOTE:
If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.
Figure: Example of the printer selection list
-
Click Print Using or Use.
-
Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.
Figure: Menu showing AirPrint selected.
Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status
.
Figure : Example of a newly added printer in the Printers & Scanners list
-
Try printing again.
If you are using Windows follow the below steps.
I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and retry, follow the steps below:
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
Then, Click on this link: https://hp.care/2JyczhA and select the operating system download and install the drivers.

Raj1788,
I appreciate your participation to my issue. I am sure that the issue can be resolved very essily and the contributions byThe_Fossette and David SMP proved that. Because of my previous exposures to HP Printing Devices, both of the previous contributions made it sound as if I needed to connect a computer to the printer to resolve my issue and since I was not instructed to do so, I asked whether a computer needed to be connected to the printer. Re: your question of OS of computers using the printer. My daughters each have HP laptops withnWindows 7and Windows 8.
Since I primarily use Apple products, I only wish I brought my Apple MacBook with me , so I could execute your contribution as you previously added in your post. I am using an Apple iPad to respond to this posting now. So I will be using either of the two HP laptops to configure the printer to print in draft mode, unless I can use the printer’s interface to configure the printer to print in draft mode.

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
Please connect the printer to the computer and then configure the printer to print in draft mode and I am positive that it will do the trick.
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!
Good day!
