Deskjet 2630
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Just bought a Deskjet 2630 inkjet printer for my daughter to take to Uni. I can't get it to connect to the University wifi (I assume because it is 'public') and there's no ethernet port so it looks like I'm stuck with connecting it to her laptop (HP with Windows 10 OS) via the USB/printer cable. However, this means I can't use the Instant Ink free trial which was one of the main reasons I bought this printer. I probably should have checked out the wifi in advance (never gave it a thought) so it's my fault - but not really what I want now as I'll have to buy ink cartridges for it which are pretty expensive. Unless anyone knows a different way I can connect it to a public wifi network?

Hey there! @Nick94, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you bought a new instant ink printer and you have issues connecting the printer wirelessly to university Wi-Fi.

Also, I understand your concern and situation you are into. So don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Unless the printer is connected to the internet the instant ink service will not work.

Please find the instant ink requirements below.

A printer with an active Internet connection: The printer must be set up on a wired or wireless network and Web Services must be turned on. This connection is required so that HP Instant Ink can securely monitor your printer’s ink status. A daily connection between your printer and the Internet is not required, but HP recommends that you allow your printer to remain connected as often as possible. After your printer has been disconnected for a few days, you receive reminders to connect. If you fail to connect, eventually your HP Instant Ink cartridges stop printing.

NOTE:

A USB cable connection does not provide the required Internet access for HP Instant Ink.

  • An email address: A valid email address (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) is required to sign up for the HP Instant Ink service.

  • A valid credit or debit card: A list of accepted credit and debit cards displays when you sign up for the HP Instant Ink service.

Also, You can check with the university IT team and allow the printer to connect the wireless network.
