I have for years been placing 5-10 sheets of "different" paper on top of "regular" paper.  (I have not tried it with a single sheet of Media.)

 

Placing several sheets of a different Media type in the top on top of "other" paper is NOT the recommended method -- that this works for my Officejet 8630 (and previously the Photosmart 7520) does NOT mean it is a good idea.

 

Yes, when changing paper type (Media), it is recommended and best (and apparently might be necessary) to remove all the existing paper, then load the tray with sheets of the paper to be used for the current job.

 

I am glad to hear this is resolved and, after all the fuss, the "fix" turned out to be a simple adjustment to your procedure.
