This error has happened before, I solved it by pressing Cancel (X) and Resume buttons and holding simultaneously. This does nothing now. The black ink cartridge is new, installed 2 weeks ago. It was printing fine till today. On the Toolbox I see either the black ink at 0% (which it is not), or not recognized. I disconnected and turned off printer, reinstalled cartridge, to no avail. Something in the software is preventing a good read on the black ink cartridge.

The Color one works as usual. I can print using that one.

One major issue is, why Cancel + Resume does nothing now?

I understand. Contacting HP Support would help you get replacement ink and also service options if the printer is having hardware issues.

I would suggest you follow troubleshooting steps from this document HP Inkjet Supplies - Print Cartridge Errors.

If the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure. Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much. I did try the steps in that document. I've also reset the printer. It recognizes the ink cartridge on and off. I can print using it for 10 minutes, then the next minute it stops. So I think it's probably a hardware issue.

In a way I'm glad I can still print with the color cartridge.

Keeping the black ink cartridge in the printer was giving me errors. Sometimes both left and right ink lights would blink, as if they are empty and/or not recognized. I took it out and I just print now with the color ink cartridge, which works fine.

Too bad though that I had just bought that black ink HP56 cartridge, it's brand new and we all know they're not cheap. Plus I had wasted the previous HP56 cartridge which was half full, thinking there's a problem with the cartridge. Not happy about that.
