Deskjet 950c
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I bought this Deskjet 950c in 2001, and I originally used it with Windows.  Now I'm on a MacBook Pro with High Sierra, and I am just using the printer drivers that are somehow native to the OS, rather than the disc that came with the printer. But it only prints black and grayscale!

Is there a way to upgrade the drivers or do something similar so that I can print in color again?

Thanks!

Please ensure the printer and the Mac have the latest updates

Printer Firmware: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Mac update: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201541

Next let's install the printer using the Apple Software Update

  1. Click the Apple menu, then click System Preferences.

  2. Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Example of the Printers & Scanners window

  3. Check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. Do one of the following steps, depending on if the printer is listed or not.

    • If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm communication and to make sure the correct driver is used. Click the name of your printer, then click the minus sign  to delete the printer. Once the printer is removed, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer or Scanner window, make sure the printer is connected to the Mac with a USB cable, or that it is on the same wired or wireless network as your Mac.

  4. Click the Use or Print Using menu, then select the name of your printer.

Select the name of your printer in the Use menu

  5. Click Add to add the printer to the list.

    • If you are prompted to install software, click Download and Install to complete the installation.

  6. Close the System Preferences window.

  7. Try to print and let me know how it goes

You can also try the HP Smart App. Please refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06188214

Keep me posted how it goes 😊
