Hi @alan639
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
To better assist you -
1) Are you using a genuine HP ink?
2) Are you experiencing this issue while making a copy as well?
While you respond to that, try the steps mentioned in this document.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for replying. (1) Yes I'm using genuine ink. (2) I have tried a double-sided copy, and there are no dirty marks, but the problem is intermittent; I might have to make a large number of copies to be sure about this. I looked at the document: it seems to be about error messages (I have had none) and problems with the cartridges and printhead, which I doubt are relevant, since the actual printing is absolutely fine. A Print Quality Diagnostic Page comes out perfect. The dirty marks are always in the same place: about 1cm up from the bottom, extending about 1cm in from the right edge (I'm using A4 paper).
I have just now followed instructions and updated the firmware, but I'd be surprised if this affects the problem.
Thank you.

I haven't tried cleaning the cartridges (it was when I fitted a new black cartridge that the problem got worse). I have tried cleaning the rollers (duplexer and inside the printer, front and rear) as per the document. So far so good, on a short print job; it would be expensive doing a long run just to check this. I will get back to you if the problem reappears.
