Apologies for jumping in unannounced.

Yes, could jam.

Caveat

The following is based on research and is not based on having used this exact model.

What?

I did have an OfficeJet 8740 a few years back.

The 8740 was a wonderful printer -- admittedly not the exact same mechanical type as the 8710.

The 8710 is the "little brother" in this series -- although slightly different from other models in the series, this printer might tolerate the same paper types and weights supported in the other printers in the same 8700 model group (for example, OfficeJet Pro 8720, 8730, 8740).

Printers of this caliber (including this model series) can handle what HP defines as "HP CardIndex paper 163-200 gsm .

Precautions should be taken to reduce the chance the paper will get caught (jammed) in the roller assembly.

The printer should be very clean -- a dirty roller assembly can drag on thicker paper.

During job setup, the paper type must be selected as other than "plain paper".

The printer is rated for this paper weight if the paper type is Index.

Cards
Up to 200 g/m2 (110 lb index)
Up to 50 cards

Reading the Specifications,  note additional restrictions:

Section Paper Handling

Supported cards

To avoid paper jams and other issues, make sure you are using the correct size and type of cards when loading the input tray.
note:
Load card stock in Tray 1 only. Card stock is not compatible for use with the ADF for single- or double-sided printing.

Paper tray capacities

Duplexer
Paper
60 to 105 g/m2 (16 to 28 lb bond)
n/a
Automatic document feeder (ADF)
Paper
60 to 90 g/m2 (16 to 24 lb bond)
50 sheets

NOTE:  Paper sizes for this paper type are included in the spec document.

If the print job dialog does not show you the type of paper you seek, try selecting Brochure or Professional.

NOTES

  • HP Brochure / Professional is typically 180 gsm
  • HP Presentation paper is 120 gsm.
  • Do not try to trick the printer by selecting paper type "Photo paper" when using card paper.
