Printer prints two-sided WORD documents fine. With other types of documents, I use the same printer settings, but I get an error message and the printer refuses to print both sides.

This is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that you are unable to print both sides while printing.
I would like to help you resolve this issue.
- Update the firmware.
- Uninstall the printer software and reinstall it.
- Reinstall the driver.
