HP Officejet 7500A
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an aging; but up to now; as good as the day that I got it; HP Officejet 7500A that is used daily for general printing and scanning. Following a number of years of using genuine cartridges; I switched to a continuous inking system which has performed flawlessly. The combination of wide format A3 printing, scanning, fax and low cost printing is/as a great combo.

Over the last few weeks I have encountered problem after problem with various colour cartridges being flagged as 3rd party or non genuine; this is followed then by being unable to print as it claims that the black cartridge is then damaged. I play swaperoo with cartridges and chips... then days later I have the same issue.

I have just found that this relates to a HP feature known as Dynamic Security that become active when I fairly recently updated the firmware on the printer. This would seem to be highly questionable on the part of HP and in my mind illegal if it is not possible to remove the said feature.

Could you please advise me on a method of turning off this feature or provide a upgrade/downgrade path. Thank you.

I'm sorry but the HP 7500 and 8500 were not on the list of affected printers from about a year ago.    If the firmware is not on the HP web site, I'm afraid it may not be available.   Contact HP directly if you still think you have the issue.

This Post pertains to the following OfficeJet products listed in the following table that has new firmware that disables the cartridge security affecting cartridges using Non-HP security chips.  If your printer is not listed here, it is not affected.

See here.  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/Dedicated-to-the-best-printing-experience/m-p/5783870/h...

Thank you for the prompt response and please accept my appologies for potentially posting in the wrong place.

The link provided does not provide a solution for the 8500A which I can absolutely assure is impacted by the issue. If the issue is not the same then it is certainly doing a very good impression in that it is firstly complaining of counterfit cartridges then a little later blacklisting them (This is what is rendering my investment in a CIS Worthless!).

If I cycle the cartridges enough I can get them to work again which would seem to suggest a black listing is in effect.

This issue only manifests following the update to Firmware_VR6.3_EMP1FN1621AR and was 100% not present with the former firmware.

If no new firmware is available could you possibly provide a method to downgrade to the previous firmware; which I believe is EMP1FN1437AR.

I am able to reproduce the issue pretty easily... that is (I can effectively disable printing during the periods of time that it is not otherwise disabled).

I have just encountered the usual daily routine of the printing complaining of counterfit cartridges when being turned on; and the latter complete disabling of the black; around warnings of setting HP ink levels to depleted.

Now no matter the removal and resetting of the black cartridge (as per instuctions) it does not show... thus you could/would think it damaged.

I swap in a legitimate HP Black and that works proving no issues elsewhere.

I remove the hp black; and remove the chip and place it onto the continuous ink cartridge. It works... thus the cartridge itself has no issues... No complains of misfitting, etc...

I switch the chip back, and the printer first complaints of non HP, counterfit blah, blah, then it strangely complains that the cartridge is damaged, remove and refit etc.

I can switch the chips from a number of other cartridges, some autoreset, two from the actual CIS kit and at some point they will all work again... a few cycles of printing later (or on wakeup of printer the following day) they become seen as counterfit then not seen, repeat... Ground Hog Day!

Anyhow... I shall have to bite the bullet, take your advice and raise a support ticket. Wish me luck.

Much thanks for your time

Thanks for the tip. However the firmware update page for our X476dn does not appear to include the dynamic security update. (The last update appears to be for the full system, from 2014, here:)

Can you point us to a more recent update page that includes the dynamic security fix? Thanks!
