My smart tank 5105 keeps giving me a E1 or E2 error message when trying to print.
I have tried to fix by resetting to factory defaults, setting the paper to A4 on the printer and the document i am trying to print.
I have also looked at the software, and it is up to date.
Anny suggestions.

@Jordan2025, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!
I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.
The E1 and E2 error messages on the HP Smart Tank 5105 typically relate to paper size or paper type mismatch between the printer settings and the print job.
Let’s go through a few steps to resolve this:
Understand the Error Codes
- E1 – Paper size mismatch.
- E2 – Paper type/length mismatch.
These errors occur when the printer detects that the paper loaded in the tray does not match the settings in the print job or printer control panel.
Check Paper Settings on the Printer
- On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Preferences > Paper Settings.
- Ensure the paper size is set to A4 (or the size you're using).
- Also, check the paper type (e.g., Plain, Photo, etc.) and make sure it matches what you're printing.
Match Paper Settings in the Print Dialog (on your PC)
- When printing, click Print > Properties or Printer Preferences.
- Under the Paper/Quality or Advanced tab:
- Set Paper Size to A4.
- Set Paper Type to match what’s loaded (e.g., Plain Paper).
- Click OK and then Print.
Power Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall and printer.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Update Firmware (if not already done)
Even if the software is up to date, it’s good to double-check the firmware:
- Go to the Official HP® Support
- Enter Smart Tank 5105, select your OS, and download the latest Firmware.
- Install and follow on-screen instructions.
Try a Test Print
After completing the above steps, try printing a test page or document. Ensure the paper is loaded properly and the guides are snug against the paper stack.
