HP ENVY6020

HP ENVY 2020 printer. E3 message flashing plus amber flashing light suggesting carriage problem. But no obstruction evident, carriage  moves fine on inspection, HP cartridges installed etc.

All the relevant HP troubleshooting tips have been followed, to no avail.

Seems as though there's a lot of these printers with this particular problem, looking at the community comments... Has anyone sorted it out yet??

Hi @LiamC75,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing an E3 error message and an amber flashing light on your HP ENVY 2020 printer indicating a carriage problem, but you haven't found any visible obstructions and the carriage moves fine upon inspection, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes, this simple step can reset the printer and resolve temporary issues.
  • Check for Jammed Paper: Even if the carriage seems to move fine, there might be a small piece of debris or paper stuck somewhere inside the printer. Carefully check all areas, including the input and output trays, and remove any obstructions.
  • Reset the Carriage: Sometimes, the carriage might be misaligned or stuck. Try manually moving the carriage back and forth gently to see if it helps to reset its position.
  • Inspect the Carriage Belt: The belt that moves the carriage might be loose, damaged, or out of place. Check if it's properly attached and not obstructed.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually find firmware updates on the HP support website for your printer model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve software-related issues causing the error.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: This involves performing a series of specific steps to reset the printer to its factory settings. Instructions for performing a hard reset can usually be found in the printer's user manual or on the HP support website.

Always be cautious when performing any troubleshooting steps to avoid causing further damage to the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
