I've used my ENVY 7640 in single cartridge mode before, but this time with only the black cartridge installed, it reports 'Cartridges appear to be missing' instead of automatically switching to single cartridge mode. I can't print anything. When I press OK, the printer cancels the job, a process which, interestingly, never ends and requires a power cycle to get out of.

Hi @sonnykeyes,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP ENVY 7640 printer is not recognizing the single black cartridge properly. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot this issue:
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the black cartridge is securely installed in the printer. Sometimes, reseating the cartridge can help establish a better connection.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Make sure they are dry before reinstalling.
- Restart Printer: Power cycle the printer by turning it off, unplugging it from the power source, waiting for about 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on again.
- Update Printer Firmware: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually check for updates through the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Reset Printer: Perform a partial reset of the printer. This can often resolve software-related issues. Instructions for a partial reset can typically be found in the printer's manual or on HP's support website.
- Check for Updates: Ensure your Mac is up to date with the latest macOS updates. Sometimes compatibility issues arise that can be resolved with system updates.
- Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure the black cartridge you are using is compatible with your HP ENVY 7640 printer. Using non-compatible cartridges can sometimes cause recognition issues.
