I replaced my Envy 4520’s cartridges and now it says they’re incompatible. I replaced two 63XLs with two new, authentic (from Costco) 63XLs. Why would my printer say they’re incompatible, when they’re exact replacements for the old cartridges? Also, the printer can’t detect the media level of the color cartridge, but does detect the black cartridge. Yes, I removed all the packaging tape.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Forums.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer. I read that you have installed both 63XL ink cartridges and both these cartridges are original HP ink cartridges. Secondly, the printer can't detect detect the media level of the color cartridge. and detects the black cartridge. You have done a remarkable job in troubleshooting this issue.

Following is the list of compatible ink cartridges:

Please perform the steps (Step 2 to step 5) from this HP document as it helps in resolving various ink cartridge related issues (including incompatible ink cartridge issues): https://hp.care/2qJ2XbQ

Please look for a compatible BIOS update based on the operating system you're using. You may download and install the BIOS update: https://hp.care/2IwPGeh

NOTE: The printer needs to be restarted once the BIOS is updated.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted for further assistance.

Cheers! 🙂
