I tried your solution and "automatic duplexing unit" is now 'installed' but the problem is still there.  Maybe I need to restart the laptop?

I don't feel confident enough to carry out the complex HP software deletion process described above and it appears that it did not fix the problem for some people.  I have only now developed this problem because I updated the printer using the HP Support Assistant.  I notice from the posts that this problem has been around since 2017, why has HP not come up with a fix in that time?

The HP Envy 4520 had stopped printing in colour as well as not duplex printing.  I have done a simple uninstall and reinstall that seems to have worked but I wait to be convinced.  I noticed from other posts that some people who did the root uninstall as recommended here were then not able to scan because there were no HP drivers.  This problem has been around since 2017 and the best HP can offer is to remove the HP drivers.  I bought the printer because it could print duplex, in colour and could scan, why do I now have to choose between these functions?  Can HP not come up with a better solution?  I have a very old, but still good  HP LaserJet 6P, which encouraged me to buy another HP printer but if I were buying again I would not buy HP.  I'm also considering my subscription to Instant Ink.

This did not help. I also completely reinstalled Windows on the machine after the new user profile and all these other steps didn't work. It is so very frustrating to walk eight feet away to a different Windows 10 machine where the automatic 2-sided function continues to work as it always had.

@SkinnyDave, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Which version of Win OS are you using?

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Refer to the steps mentioned in this document to know how to print on both sides.

You may also refer to page 15 of the User guide.

Also, perform these steps:

  • Go to Control panel – Devices and printer.
  • Right-click on Envy 4520 and select “Printer properties”.
  • Select the “Device settings” tab.
  • Ensure that the “Duplex unit” is set to “Installed” rather than “Not installed” and save the settings.
  • Now again give a right-click on the printer icon and select “Printing preferences”.
  • If a "Printing shortcuts" tab is available, select the "Print on single side" or "1-Sided Printing" option.
  • If “Printing shortcut” is not available, click the “Layout”, “Features”, or “Finishing tab”, depending on which tab displays in your driver version.
  • Locate the "Print on single side" or "1-Sided Printing" menu or option, then select the binding or page flip option depending on if you want the document to read like a booklet or a tablet and save the settings.

Let me know how this goes.

I have done all these steps before. I will try them again on this NEW Windows install (it's Windows 10, as mentioned several times in the thread) but I do not anticipate any changes. Sometimes trying to switch "on" this duplex thing causes errors to start popping up, at which point only going to the default windows driver will fix. This whole thing has just been one error after another.

When I'm not involved in actually needing the printer for a while, I was going to try to dismantle my setup and try to do the INITIAL setup while WIRED. Thinking back to my experience with the one computer that does work (and always HAS worked), it was INITIALLY set up with a USB cable. It works fine now wirelessly, but it is true that the first setup done was with a wire.

@SkinnyDave

I understand. Try the steps mentioned in my previous post which may help to resolve this issue and let me know how this goes.

Alternatively, you may use Windows built-in driver and try printing on both sides

Refer to this document to know how.

Keep me posted.
