Hi
can someone please tell me how to turn off the cartridge protector so can use any cartridge compatible in the printer .. I can’t find it anywhere it’s driving me insane

I recently had my two ink cartridges (HP63) refilled. Now the black one says incompatible cartridge. I have tried cleaning and resetting but no luck. I found info online about “Disable Protected Cartridge Error”. I “restored factory defaults” as per procedure. This was supposed to “disable the protected cartridge feature” but is also did not seem to work. Am I not allowed to refill ink cartridges? Do I have to use new cartridges every time?
Thanks

Hello,
Ink cartridge “protection” begins when a cartridge is installed into a HP printer and means that the product can only be used in that particular machine. This limits the ink cartridge to being used in that printer alone and will even prevent it being used in a replacement model if your current printer is unable to be used.
Unfortunately, this protection will render the cartridge useless in other machines, forcing you to throw the cartridge away.
However try the below steps..
Please try on a Windows computer
- Click on the “start” button on your computer, and then click “Devices and Printers”
- Find your HP printer and double-click it to open the “Settings” page.
- Click the text for “Estimated Ink Levels” under the heading of “Shopping Resources”. This will open the HP Toolbox window.
- Click the tab for “Cartridge Protection”
- CLick the radio button next to “Disable HP Cartridge Protection”.
- Click the “Save Setting” button to save your new setting. Then, close the window.
- You might need to remove and re-install the cartridge for it to be recognised properly.

Hello,
If you have not installed the Full Feature software of the printer then iam afraid you'd not get the options i mentioned in the earlier post.
If you have installed the Full Featured software then there would be a printer icon on your desktop. Double clicking on it will open the Printer Assistant.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Should you have a printer that’s not connected to the internet, you can go to “settings” on the printer menu by opening the printer icon on the desktop and simply select the “disable cartridge protection” option available.
Alternatively, if your printer has internet connectivity you can open up a browser on a PC or laptop and type in your printer’s IP address. From there, you can browse to the “settings” option.
Let me know if this helps.
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution button, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Thanks!

Thanks for your help.
When I got to the "Disable HP Cartridge Protection” it was already selected. I had both cartridges refilled but it was only the black that stopped working. Maybe there is something actually wrong with the black cartridge. For future reference, if I install a new black cartridge, with "Disable HP Cartridge Protection" on, will I be able to refill my cartridges?
Thanks

Yes, i guess.
I realize that the cost factor is the one that make customers think of refilling the ink.
However, refiling ink may cause damage to printer / printhead which would void the printer warratny .
