After giving up on having this printer produce a 4x6 photo with out borders or with an even border (with help from three different people on this forum), I'm trying to print a simple document on 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

I have not made any changes or updates; have a wireless connection.

Each time I try I get a message saying that the printer detects that the paper I have specified (in the paper tray) is the wrong size. I have reset everything I can think of--to no avail.

Is there such a thing as a reset button? I have unplugged, rebooted, everything short of throwing it out the window.

I bought this printer specifically because it was supposed to print photos well. Now it won't print anything!

For both problems (4x6 photos and 8.5x11 paper) there probably two places you need to look:  both the printer and the program you're printing from - say MS Word - have a dialog box for printing.

As far as "wrong size paper in the tray" and since you've apparently been trying different things for 4x6 photos, it may be that you have the settings in the Print Dialog box for MS Word  set for 4x6 paper.

Open a Word Document, click FILE > PRINT; and the Print Dialog opens.  Click PROPERTIES, then at the top click PAPER/QUALITY.   Click ADVANCED > PAPER/OUTPUT (that is the paper in the tray).  It may now say 4x6, 8x10, A4, etc.   So for your 8.5 x 11 paper set it to A4; here's where you set for 4x6 color prints, also.

In addition, the printer has a print preferences setting in the Printer Assistant (feature of this printer).  Open it in Windows 10 Charms.    Click on the " HP" charm, a drop down list appears.  There is a "printer" icon next to label "HP ENVY 5660 series."  Left click and it opens the Printer Assistant.

In Printer Assistant at top is PRINT & SCAN, and below is PRINT (or SCAN).  Click PREFERENCES > PAPER/QUALLITY.   Set the Paper Source to Main Tray for as appropriate (A4 is 8x11.5 and 4x6 for photos) and set Media as appropriate.  Click advanced and set Paper Size as appropriate.  NOTE HERE it says "PAPER/OUTPUT" meaning this sets the printer's output paper size.   Click OK and OK and exit or minimize.

You could try downloading the printer's software for your computer.  It resets the printer back to default settings. Sometimes that solves problems. I've seen this problem in other comments, am not a geek and don't have the perfect solution. Before doing that, try the above.  Good Luck.

I notice one problem was trying to print borderless photos, for which, settings are found in the HP Printer Assistant.  The easiest way to manage is using the "Printing Shortcuts" found in the Preferences of the HP Printer Assistant.    View each to see how the settings change (from Everyday to borderless, etc.)  Note in borderless and white bordered the quality is "Normal."

If you wish to have your personalized shortcut, if you change any settings, the "Apply" button becomes active PLUS a new shortcut appears:  "User Specified Print Settings.   Say you change Print Quality to "Best."  When ready click on "Save As" and name it (My Borderless-Best).  Click OK and printing will be as set up.

NOTE you may need to change back when done say to "General Everyday Printing."  There's mutiple combinations so experiment and save several.

Remember these actions set up the printer itself, but you still print from whichever Photo  program you use such as the "Photos" charm in Windows 10.
