Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased an Envy 7640 printer about 1 1/2 years ago and have generally had good luck with it.  However, over the last few months I've experienced the "printer is offline" message and have tried all sorts of things I've found in this forum to correct the problem.  Absolutey nothing has worked with one exception.  One solution that does work is to unplug the printer from the outlet/surge protector and press/hold the power button for 15 seconds.  After plugging in the power cord and waiting for the printer to restart it will show the printer online.  This worked flawlessly until this morning which took 4 attempts at this procedure to fix it.  I printed a page and shortly after the printer is again offlne.  While the procedure I used works most of the time there must be  a permanent solution to the problem.  I have not uninstalled/reinstalled the software because in the past I had a problem with being unable to print borderless photos and being unable to uninstall the software.  With HP help this problem was fixed and I am reluctant to screw it up since the fix will require me to pay for support.  Can HP please provide a permanent fix for the printer offline issue?  Considering the number of posts in this forum with this problem one might expect HP would do something permanent.  I've been using HP printers for years and I would expect better support than this.  Please HELP.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Can you try using a TCP/IP port?

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Let us know if that works

Wel, this solution seems to have worked.  The printer hasn't gone offline since the tcp/ip port was added and all functions seem to be working as expected.  However, there is one glitch.  My wife cannot print to the printer from her iPad using airprint.  I think I know what the problem is.   When the tcp/ip port was created and that process was done another printer with the same name shows in the list of printers and scanners.  I think this device should be removed so that her iPad will recognize the proper printer.  Please tell me what you think of that.

Hi,

Glad to hear that your issue is resolved and all is working well now.

For the IPad, can you try this:

I have also created a fixed IP address and the printer still loses its connection daily. When turned off and on it reconnects with the fixed IP address, so that does not seem to be the problem. Now what?
