Hello, I've got an HP Envy Photo 6230 printer that I've never used but I've lost the setup cartridges. I've bought two new HP 303XL cartridges but I'm being told that I need to insert the setup cartridges. Is there a way around this or have I bought a printer that I can't use and wasted £74 on two new HP cartridges?

Please help as this is urgent.

Thanks

Richard

Hi @Richard123450,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP Envy Photo 6230 printer, like many other HP printers, typically comes with setup cartridges that are designed for the initial printer setup. These setup cartridges often have a special chip or coding to help you initialize the printer. If you've lost the setup cartridges and are being prompted to insert them, there are a few things you can try.

  • Reset the Printer: Some HP printers can be reset to bypass the requirement for setup cartridges. To do this, you'll need to enter a specific series of button presses. However, the exact steps may vary depending on your printer model. Check your printer's manual or visit the HP support website for instructions on how to perform a reset.
  • Use a Cartridge Hack: Some users have reported success by using a "cartridge hack" or a "chip resetter" device, which tricks the printer into thinking that the setup cartridges are inserted. This is not recommended by HP, and it may void your warranty if you have one, but it could be a last resort if you're unable to obtain setup cartridges.
  • Return the Cartridges: If none of the above solutions work, you may consider returning the HP 303XL cartridges to the store where you purchased them, explaining the situation, and seeking a refund or exchange.
  • Purchase Setup Cartridges: While this is not an ideal solution, you can try to purchase the original setup cartridges from HP or an authorized dealer. Once you've completed the initial setup, you can then use your newly purchased HP 303XL cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,

Thanks for your detailed reply. Unfortunately nothing has made any difference.

Reset the printer: I tried this but it made no difference.

Use a cartridge hack: As stated in my original post, the cartridges I'm trying to use are genuine HP cartridges. Where would I begin to hack an HP cartridge?

Return the cartridges: Amazon said that a cartridge that has been opened and installed cannot be returned which is fair enough. This is an HP problem, not a cartridge problem.

Purchase SETUP cartridges: Thought of that and spent hours looking for some for my make and model. No such luck.

I just need to know how to do a OOBE reset on a HP Envy Photo 6230 printer.

If I can't do that I'll just chuck it all in the bin and never buy anything HP again.

All the best

Richard

Hi Irwin6,

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I have no private message from you. Are you referring to the message from Alden4 where he advises me to contact support? I'm doing that already. Thanks.

Richard
