I have a laser jet M234dwe printer which dropped out of insta ink and now HP says it does not support my laser jet printer now. It had an Install ink cartridge in it when cancelled. They sold me a 134A toner cartridge but when I put it in I got a ER75 code. How do I get my printer to work. I called HP and they gave me two options 1) pay $20 to troubleshooting shoot it and if it doesn’t work no refund, 2) pay $8 per month for 24 months on a new printer

Hi @Jcq6322

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue — I understand how frustrating this situation must be, especially when your printer was working previously under an Instant Ink subscription.

The ER75 error on your HP LaserJet M234dwe indicates a toner cartridge issue, most likely related to toner type mismatch or DRM locking from a previous Instant Ink (HP+ subscription) setup.

Let’s work through this and get your printer running properly again.

Step-by-Step: Fix the ER75 Code and Restore Printing

Step 1: Remove All Instant Ink Cartridges

Open the toner access door.

Remove the “Install” or Instant Ink cartridge. These are locked to your subscription, even after cancellation.

Keep only the newly purchased HP 134A toner in the printer.

Step 2: Confirm the Toner You Purchased

The correct cartridge for your printer (LaserJet M234dwe) is:

HP 134A Black Original LaserJet Toner Cartridge (W1340A)

Make sure:

It’s not labeled “Introductory,” “Starter,” or “Instant Ink.”

It is sealed retail packaging.

You bought it from an authorized retailer (not second-hand or remanufactured).

Step 3: Power Cycle the Printer

Power off the printer.

Disconnect the power cord from the wall.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

Wait for the printer to initialize.

Step 4: Perform a Supply Memory Reset

Sometimes the printer needs to reinitialize the toner memory.

Remove the toner cartridge.

Power on the printer without the cartridge installed.

Wait until you see a “missing toner” message.

Insert the retail HP 134A cartridge.

Close the door and let it recalibrate.

Step 5: Update the Printer Firmware (If You Can Access Menu)

If the printer responds:

Go to: HP LaserJet M234dwe Firmware Page

Download the latest firmware for your model.

Install using HP Smart or USB method on your PC.
