HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, after starting up, the printer always shows 49 on the display and does not respond at all. I cannot print a diagnostic page, it does not connect to the Wi-Fi, and I cannot establish a connection via USB either. Can you help me?

Hi @PlainMike

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're getting an error code 49 on your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe Printer is typically a firmware error. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on.

Update the Firmware:

  • Ensure you have the latest firmware for your printer model. Since you cannot connect the printer directly, you might need to use a USB flash drive to update the firmware. You can download the latest firmware from the HP Support website on another computer, transfer it to a USB, and then connect the USB to the printer if it becomes responsive.

Check for Connection Issues:

  • Ensure all cables are securely connected, and try a different USB port or cable for connection.

Try a Cold Reset:

  • Power off the printer, then press and hold the 'Cancel' button while turning the printer back on to perform a cold reset.

Check for Network Conflicts:

  • If you had the printer connected to Wi-Fi before, check if there are any IP conflicts in your network. Restart your router to reset network settings.

Remove and Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • On your computer, remove the printer from your list of devices, and reinstall the drivers from the HP website using a direct connection (if possible).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
