I have an Event Code, 71.02.4A. I looked for jammed paper and found none. I've turned the printer off and on (daily for weeks) and I still can't print. No other information is forthcoming. Any ideas?

Thank you for posting, however you need to include more details to make it possible for someone to provide guidance. The list below is a generic list of possible information to provide and some may not be applicable in your case.

-Be sure to include model of printer
-operating system of computer
- printer driver installed
- printer connected via WIFI, Ethernet or USB?
- has it ever worked?
- any error messages appearing on the screen including numeric or text errors.
- anything that may happened just before the error started such as paper jams or power failures.
- If you can include a sample that would help when issue is print quality

Good questions. I forgot that the information I'd given HP wasn't going to transfer to this conversation (despite coming here from their website).

HP OfficeJet 8022 (not the Pro series)

Windows 11

Driver Installed: Yes, the printer was working fine until a couple of months ago (so it clearly had a driver then - I suppose a corrupted driver is possible).

Connection: USB

Has it worked: Yes. It will still scan and send to my machine, so it's not a communication blockage of some sort.

Error Message on HP Smart interface tool: "Printer Failure" "There is a problem with the printer or print system. Turn off the printer, unplug and then plug in the power cord, and then turn on the printer again. If the problem persists, contact support." ...we're at the "...contact support" part of the process.

Error Message on Printer: same as above plus "Event Code: 71.02.4A"

Nothing happens before the error message. This morning the screen on the printer did not describe an error, which is unusual - it usually shows an error message when I power up the system. Even so, when I attempted to print a PDF I got the error message there and confirmed it on my computer.

As a check on the driver I decided to go to the drivers page for HP, downloaded from the software utility option and performed the setup using the downloaded file. Same error. The other options did not appear to apply as two were labeled "Pro" (we don't have the Pro series) and we don't need fax functions. For a moment I thought I was onto something when the tool said there was a communication error. I checked the connection at the printer, fine, and then moved the connection on the computer to an adjacent open USB port and the install finished. Unfortunately, when I attempted to print the same message came back up. Here's a screen shot of the download page on the HP site with my notes on the three options I passed by and then the option I chose.

Anybody out there? Is there some bit of information I need to add to what I've already provided?

Hi @Golf-is-better,

Welcome back, and thank you for providing all those details.

I appreciate the time you've taken to document the issue and the troubleshooting you've already completed.

Based on what you've described:

The printer is detected by the computer.

Scanning works normally over USB.

Reinstalling the driver did not resolve the issue.

The printer consistently reports "Printer Failure" with event code 71.02.4A.

Since communication between the PC and printer is working (scanning succeeds), this points to an internal printer issue rather than a Windows driver or USB connection problem.

Before considering service, let's try a couple of additional checks:

Check if the printer can make a standalone copy

Place a document on the scanner glass and try making a copy directly from the printer's control panel without using the computer.

If copying also fails with the same error, it confirms the issue is within the printer itself.

If copying works, the issue may be isolated to the print subsystem.

Refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

After the reset:

Reconnect the printer to your computer.

Reinstall it using the HP Smart app or the full feature software.

Test printing again.

Update the printer firmware

Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.

Could you also let us know:

Can the printer make a standalone copy directly from the control panel?

Does the error appear immediately after power-on, or only when you send a print job?

If the 71.02.4A error appears immediately after startup and persists even after the reset, while scanning continues to function, it is likely indicative of an internal printer hardware fault that cannot be resolved through software troubleshooting.

I look forward to your update.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

I tried a copy from the printer by placing an item on the glass and hitting copy. Same event code error message comes back as for printing.

The follow up steps, unfortunately, look like my best option. To prepare myself for next actions I attempted to open both links. The first link failed with a variation on, "Sorry, we can't find that". The second link works. Fortunately, I have a day job. I likely won't get back to this task until Thursday at the earliest. At that time, I'll hope to have a new link for task one, restoring to factory defaults - I assume that I'll be resetting the printer (which I was hoping to verify when I clicked the link that failed).

Thanks for the breakdown of next steps. I'll respond again when I've succeeded or failed.
