I am having the error code 71.02.4a. There are no visible paper jams, and the printer head moves when ink catridges are not installed. I have tried hard reseting the printer to factory defaults via software, and powering on and off several times.

Hi @MegaGOON
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error code 71.02.4a on HP printers usually indicates a mechanical issue with the printer, often related to a problem in the paper path or a malfunction with the internal motors or gears. While you’ve already tried a factory reset and power cycling, there are several additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this error. Here's a comprehensive guide to address the 71.02.4a error:
1. Check for Paper Jams Again (Thoroughly)
- Look for hidden jams: Even though you've checked for visible paper jams, sometimes small bits of paper or debris can get stuck in the printer and cause this error. It might not always be obvious.
- Check all accessible areas: Open all paper trays, the back of the printer, and the area around the printhead.
- Look for small debris: Use a flashlight to thoroughly inspect for any small pieces of paper or foreign objects.
2. Check for Blocked or Misaligned Printhead
- The error could be related to the printhead movement being obstructed. Even though you noted that the printhead moves when cartridges are removed, it's possible that there's some obstruction or misalignment.
- Manually move the printhead: With the printer turned off, gently move the printhead back and forth to ensure it moves freely without resistance. If it feels stuck or difficult to move, there may be something physically blocking its movement or the mechanism could be faulty.
3. Inspect the Gears and Rollers
- Sometimes, the error occurs due to damaged or misaligned gears that drive the paper feed or printhead. These internal gears can sometimes wear out or get misaligned over time.
- Listen for unusual sounds: When turning the printer on or during printing, listen carefully for any grinding or abnormal sounds. If you hear any, the gear mechanism could be the source of the problem.
- Inspect for broken parts: If you can, visually inspect the gears (while the printer is turned off) to see if anything is broken or out of place.
I hope this helps.
