The printer displayed the error code as soon as the print job was sent to print, and the lights flashed out of sequence. The printer had to be switched off,  unplugged, and when plugged back in and turned on the settings were checked and that the software was up to date for the printer: it said everything was up to date. Please advise if anything needs doing with the printer to prevent the issue arising again.
