Hi @sandjmurphy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code "E6" on an HP Deskjet 6420 printer indicates a carriage jam. This typically means that the print carriage, which holds the ink cartridges, is unable to move freely. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

Turn off the Printer: Start by turning off the printer to prevent any further damage.

Clear any Obstructions: Open the printer cover and check for any paper jams, foreign objects, or obstructions in the carriage path. Carefully remove any debris you find.

Move the Carriage: Manually move the carriage along its path to see if it's stuck. Gently push the carriage to one side, then back to the other side to ensure it moves freely. If it feels stuck, do not force it.

Check Carriage Mechanism: Look for any broken or misaligned parts in the carriage mechanism. If you notice anything out of place, it may need to be repaired or replaced.

Reset the Printer: After clearing any obstructions and ensuring the carriage moves freely, close the printer cover and turn the printer back on. This may clear the error message.

Perform a Hard Reset: If the error persists, try performing a hard reset on the printer. To do this, turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the back, and wait for about 60 seconds. Then, reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model on the HP website. Installing the latest firmware may help resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
