Hi @CBS29,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The E3 error on your HP Smart Tank 5106 printer means there is a carriage jam or obstruction preventing the ink carriage from moving freely. Here’s the troubleshooting process:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back into a direct wall outlet (avoid power strips) and turn it on.

Step 2: Check for Carriage Obstructions

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Look inside for:
    • Paper scraps, packing material, or foreign objects.
    • Ensure the printhead latch and cover are fully closed.
  3. Gently move the carriage left and right to confirm it moves freely.

Step 3: Reseat Ink Cartridges

  1. Remove all ink cartridges.
  2. Inspect the electrical contacts for ink or debris.
  3. Clean contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
  4. Reinstall cartridges securely in their correct slots.

Step 4: Retry Cleaning

  • After clearing the jam and reseating cartridges, try Clean Printhead again from the printer menu or the HP Smart app.

Step 5: Update Firmware

  • Open HP Smart → Printer Settings → Advanced Settings (EWS).
  • Go to Tools → Printer Update → Check Now and install any updates.

If E3 Persists

  • The carriage mechanism or encoder strip may need service.
  • Contact HP Support for repair or replacement options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
