I have been trying to fix this for weeks. I have unplugged, turned off as directed, restarted and I am still getting the same messages: 1) you turned the power off incorrectly (exact words?) 2) start alignment 3) remove paper jam 4) error message.
OfficeJet Pro 6978: I need to get this fixed ASAP = the printer is only a couple of years old, please don't tell me I have to replace ANOTHER printer.?

Let's try a power reset on the printer
Reset the product
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
- Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
