Hi @hamlinda ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the "access door open" error on your HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Printer may indicate that the printer believes the cartridge or access door is open, even if it appears closed. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check the Access Door
- Ensure the cartridge access door is completely closed.
- Press down gently but firmly to ensure it's latched securely.
2. Inspect the Cartridge Area
- Open the access door and check for any obstructions, such as:
- Loose bits of paper.
- Dirt or debris around the hinges or sensors.
- Clean the area gently if needed.
3. Verify Cartridge Installation
- Remove the cartridges carefully.
- Reinstall them, ensuring they are seated properly.
- Close the access door after reinstalling the cartridges.
4. Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 2–3 minutes.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
5. Check for Sensor Issues
- The printer has sensors that detect whether the access door is closed. If these are misaligned or dirty, the error may appear.
- Look for small switches or sensors around the edges of the door or cartridge bay.
- Clean them gently with a soft cloth.
6. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure the printer's firmware is up to date. Use the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support Website to download and install the latest firmware.
7. Reset the Printer
- Perform a factory reset if the above steps don't resolve the issue:
- Disconnect the power cord while the printer is on.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
8. Inspect for Physical Damage
- Check the access door and surrounding areas for any visible damage or broken parts that might prevent the door from closing properly.
9. Test Printing
- Once the error is resolved, print a test page to confirm functionality.
