My deskjet will not read the black cartridge. This is the 3rd cartridge I’ve replaced. It keeps blinking empty along with the world blinking. I have digitally and manually cleaned the print head multiple times. I have done multiple hard resets. It prints a diagnostics page and then the printer stops working again. It goes back to blinking empty.

Hi @Dramaload,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We’re Here With You. And Yes, This Can Be Fixed. If your HP DeskJet printer is not recognizing the black cartridge despite multiple replacements and cleaning efforts, here are some steps you can follow to try and resolve the issue:

  1. Verify Cartridge Authenticity:
    • Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP or remanufactured cartridges may not be recognized correctly by the printer.

  2. Inspect Cartridge Contacts:
    • Remove the black cartridge from the printer.
    • Examine the electrical contacts on the cartridge for any ink residue or debris, and clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
    • Allow the contacts to dry before reinserting the cartridge.

  3. Check the Printer Cartridge Slot:
    • Inspect the printer’s cartridge slot for any ink residue, dirt, or debris and clean it carefully with a dry, lint-free cloth.

  4. Proper Cartridge Installation:
    • Confirm that the cartridge is installed correctly, ensuring it clicks into place securely in its designated slot.

  5. Printer Firmware Update:
    • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Visit the Official HP® Support to download any available firmware updates for your printer model.

  6. Reset the Printer Again:
    • Disconnect the printer from the power source while it is turned on.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in and powering it on.

  7. Perform a Test Print:
    • Print a diagnostic page or test pattern from the printer to check for any errors or issues.

  8. Replace the Cartridge:
    • If a genuine and new cartridge still doesn't work, try using a different cartridge in case the one you purchased is defective.

  9. Printer Status Monitoring:
    • If available, use the printer software on your computer to check for error messages or codes that might indicate the issue’s cause.

If none of these solutions work, it might indicate a deeper hardware issue with the printer itself. In such cases, contacting an HP service request might be necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
