When printing on 65lb card stock, I constantly get a paper jam warning, but there is no paper jam. The only way to clear it is to unplug the printer and plug it back in. HP does not recommend it, but it can't print, so what should we do??? I used to have an office jet 8610 and never had any card stock issues or false paper jams. Never had to select paper type. it just worked. But this newer, more expensive printer can't do the job. If I put in card stock, it always asks if I changed the paper type...who cares? The old printer never asked. It just printed. It feels like this printer is a significant downgrade in that respect. I called online support, and they offered to replace the printer, but it is brand new... so I decided to go with an Epson instead. I have always purchased all HP products for my printers and PCs, but after this experience, I think I will go with other much better companies and products. HP lost a loyal customer on this. Too many hours were wasted on the phone trying to print and wait for all that ink reprinting false jams. Hopefully, HP engineers and manufacturers can learn how to make their more expensive products as good as their older, cheaper ones regarding card stock printing. I know HP loves to use the innovation buzzword, which is the industry flavor of the decade. But perhaps they need to renovate instead of innovate...

Welcome to the HP English Community --
You asked "Who cares?"
The printer cares about the paper size and type.
AND
This printer model lacks a paper sensor to automatically sense and adjust the paper size / type information.
If the printer "jams" due to an unknown paper size type, the jam can be an actual paper jam or a paper sensor "jam" that results from a conflict between the paper loaded in the printer tray and the job configuration settings.
True -- If you are not used to having to deal with this aspect of using a printer, the task might seem beyond what you are willing to do.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
For those who still have this - or nearly any other HP printer - the following is important.
The printer itself must be aware of the paper size and type.
and
This requirement is in addition to the job configuration settings made during job setup.
There are generally two ways to alert the printer to the Tray and Paper settings.
- Touchscreen Printer Control Panel - "Modify" / Change paper size and type after the paper is changed and / or after the tray is opened and then closed.
AND / OR
- Embedded Web Server (EWS) Tray and Paper Settings
