printer is signalling a jam . Message keeps coming back despite there being no jam. Have rebooted etc. Still there. Will not even let me scan which should be unaffected by any printing jam any way.

Hello Jame,

Yes, there are support links for false paper jam, but with a scanning problem, we might address that first.   There could be two things:  The computer and printer not wirelessly connected or we need to reinstall the software.  If any step resolves it, forgo any  further steps.

 

To check the first, let's do a reboot of the components.  Turn off the router/modem, printer and computer.  Leave router off 60 seconds, then turn each on successively in that order (router, printer, computer).  Let each completely turn on (no flashing lights, printer stops its startup noises, etc.) before the next.  Any improvement(s)?  NOTE:  this may not correct a false paper jam.  Get back if so. 

 

Next let's do a Hard Reset of the printer, thus:

 

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.  note: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.  Wait for lights flashing, noises and silent.  Any results?

So, to reinstall software, lets first completely remove it's components with the following. 

- Uninstall the printer or printers by using this REVO uninstall program.  In the window that opens, highlight by a left click on all listings of whichever printers you need to install (probably all).  Then at the top of the page click Uninstall.

- Download the most up-to-date printer software.  DO NOT use the disc that came in the box, as it may not be up to date.  There are two sources.  Follow directions, precisely.

 

-The easiest is (with the printer turned on) go to 123.HP.com and it will automatically find your computer and download/install the printer's software/driver onto the computer.  It should then work seamlessly at that point.  Get back if some glitch.  CAUTION there are look alike sites that mimic 123.HP.com -  enter that in the address bar of search engine.

 

- You may prefer the official HP Support page at this link.  With printer on, click on Software and Drivers > Go > Download.  Again, it should work after it completes.  Save this link - lots of info.

An afterthought, before doing the install, etc. you might check to see if you simply need to  Enable the   Scan to Computer.  Open the Printer Assistant.  It should be an icon on your desktop that looks like the printer.  Or in Windows, left click the Charms (Window in lower left) and scroll down to HP, where you will find the icon of the printer with the label "HP Envy 5540 series."   That is the P.Assist.  

 

In P. Assst. click on Scan and Manage Scan to Computer, check the Enable if not already done.  Advise on what you find.

 

If that helps with scanning, then let's work on Paper Jam, if you still need it.    Here's some links, if needed. 

Forgo any further fixes, If any step improves the performance, .

 

Do the Hard Reset of the printer, if not done so.

I haven't asked - is this a brand new printer, just installed on the computer; or did this problem just crop up recently?

Hello.  Out of the box....set up process.....I get a paper jam error. There is no paper in the machine. I just opened it. Please advise.  Thank you.
