I received a notice of a firmware update available and so I downloaded it and tried to run it. It came back with a message that the firmware update had failed, please reboot my printer and router and try again.

Since then I have tried a number of times to re-install the firmware, printer software, etc and I still cannot communicate to the printer. I shut off the wireless and directly connected the printer with a USB cable. I still get the firmware install failure and I still cannot communicate with the printer.  I even tried to reset the printer to factory defaults and that did not help.

Is there anyway to reset the printer or do I now have a boat anchor?

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the printer firmware update has failed,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Any particular reason you want to upgrade the printer?

While you respond to that, here's a few steps to help reset the printer:

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Once done, you retry the firmware upgrade, however, you don't have to install it, unless you have any specific issues that requires a firmware upgrade.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Riddle_Decipher - I tried that several times and the firmware install still fails.

I only tried to update the firmware because the HP software wanted to. Now I cannot communicate with the printer at all. Just turning the printer off (unplugging it) does no good to resolve the coommunication issue.

I also tried to restore the printer to factory defaults. That did not work either.  I can't even try to reinstall the printer on my computer because it cannot seem to communicate with it even though it seems to recognize that it is connected.

I just bought this printer last summer at Walmart but HP says it is already out of warranty and wants 60 buck for a support call. That is more than I paid for it. What a joke.

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Does the copier work as a stand alone printer?

If it doesn't either, I recommend you Contact HP to have the device either repaired or replacement:

Hi

There is a know firmware issue with 3830 printer. The Wifi connection is not reliable, my printer is now unable to connect to my network. There is a firmware fix for this, I downloaded your firmware updater from the follow site, I am using a mac.

https://support.hp.com/au-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-3830-all-in-one-printer-series/7172321

Now, this software will not even detect my printer. I have the printer connected via USB, the iMac sees the printer and it works fine. Your HP Utility app also works fine yet the firmware update software doesn't even detect the printer.

Does that software actually work? It must have some bug in it.

Can you please fix your firmware updater software so I can update the fix for my printer.

I also tested the windows version of the updator software, and that doesn't even work either. But that is even worse, I can't even install your all in one drivers, it simply doesn't see the printer, even though it's connect via USB and windows sees it.

How is it that both the win and mac firmware updater software can't make a USB connection with my printer?
I also tried restoring the factory defaults on the printer to see if that helps, but still the same issue.

Please help, I need to printer to work again, I just bought it on a few months ago.

Kind Regards
Nicholas.

Hi

I managed to get the software at least seeing the printer. What I did was drag the updater applications into the apps folder of the mac, when I run it, it doesn't see the printer, very strange.  If I open up the dmg file and run HP Firmware Updater.app, it then sees the printer.

HOWEVER, Another Issue. I get the following message

This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device.

But there is a know fix for this device

https://support.hp.com/au-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-3830-all-in-one-printer-series/7172321

What is going on with this software?

Kind Regards

Nick
