Contacted HP because printer did not connect to WiFi; redirected to Geek Tech Care; asked to pay $1,289 for work that may or may not have been performed (asked for proof repeatedly; tech responded with ‘yeah, yeah’). On the phone with same tech for hours over several days without any resolution, except that printer no longer works at all, even using a USB cable. I wonder whether this is a scam?

@Emma264,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Well, firstly, as a volunteer-participant in this Community, I do not represent HP, and I don't speak for them.

Having said that, having 'been around' for a while, so to speak, in my personal and professional experience, I recognize a scam when I see it.

Besides, their usage of the word "Geek" makes me, as a Geek, look bad.

Honestly, I have a difficult time believing HP would do business with a non-BBB accredited company.

Anyway, as the saying goes: a picture says more than 1,000 words:

etc.

[EDIT:] @Paul_Tikkanen, I am actually very interested what you have to say.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Well, rats.

We are sorry you were scammed.

Contact your bank - let them know what happened to have the charges removed.

The only thing we can do from this side is to forward your concern to our Moderator team.

I will do that as soon as this message is posted.

Your question answered:

HP does not support a scam.  Not.  Certainly not.

The Internet is full of presumed good help, and also rats, thieves, and dark corners - very dark and dangerous corners.

Whomever you contacted was not HP.

Contact your bank.

Printer sites pretending to be something they are not can be particularly malicious.

Details...

There are thousands of "support" sites on the Internet.

Every major company, including HP, is plagued by scam sites that promise, beg, threaten, or pretend to be the good guys.

HP Support does not post free-to-find phone numbers on the Internet.

HP Support does not transfer you to scammers and thieves,

HP Support does not threaten, promise, lie, beg, or cajole,

HP Support does not sneak into your computer,

HP Support does not track you,

HP Support does not sell any products to clear your computer of imaginary bugs.

HP Support does not want to sell you security software.

HP Support requires that you submit your online in-Warranty Repair request to the proper channel for your region.

HP Instant Ink Support   handles issues and questions related to the Instant Ink Subscription service.

Reminders - READ

Case submission to HP Support is available to those whose devices registered and are still in Warranty.

Some regions display phone / chat contact information only after the case is submitted online

Not every issue is covered under the standard Hardware Warranty.  Purchased Care Pack Warranties differ by contract.

HP is not a "general" repair facility: Requests for out-of-warranty repairs are usually not accepted.

If the problem is hardware, if your device is in Warranty, if your device is Registered, and you cannot submit your case to Support, let us know and we will forward a request.

Important

HP Phone numbers you find on the Internet have likely been hijacked. Old HP phone numbers – those numbers no longer used by HP since the move to “online” case submissions – might have been taken over by thieves.

Do not be a victim.

Stay vigilant.
