I have a hp laserjet m234sdwe and constantly have issues when trying to do the simplest thing, change toner.
We bought a genuine toner from HP, have it connected to the internet and when I change the toner, it gets stuck on validating with an error 75.
Why does it REQUIRE an internet connection to do a simple thing such as changing the toner?
I wouldn't be so frustrated if the HP smart app, or even the printer itself would validate after I changed the toner.
I've tried factory reset, I've tried network reset, tried the wireless reset.
I've tried it on different networks, different computers, different installs of HP smart.
Nothing works.
The printer recognizes that it has a real HP toner in it and it is 100% but it will not print anything because it is stuck on validating status.
What is the REAL solution to this?
It's a shame that I can't find any good information on this on the entire HP support site.

@YourPrinterSuc5, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you're having with your HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe printer. The requirement for an internet connection is due to the HP+ service, which includes features like cloud-based printing and additional warranty benefits. This model specifically requires an internet connection to validate the toner and ensure it is genuine.
You’ve done most of the right steps already. Let’s go through a fresh, clean process that has worked for many others:
🔁 Step-by-Step Fix
- Remove the toner cartridge.
- Unplug the printer from power for at least 3 minutes.
- Plug it back in and wait for it to fully boot up, without the toner installed.
- Once it says “Install toner” or similar, connect the printer to Wi-Fi (or Ethernet).
Make sure it's showing “Connected” on the panel.
- Install the HP Smart App (if not already) on a device that has:
- An active internet connection
- No VPN or firewall interference
- Admin rights
- Insert the HP Genuine Toner after the printer is fully online and idle.
- Watch if it proceeds with validation now.
🌐 If Still Stuck on Validation:
Login to HP Smart via a browser: https://www.hpsmart.com
- Go to My Printer > Settings > Supplies.
- Sometimes manually re-registering or refreshing supply status helps.
You may also try from the Embedded Web Server:
- Type the printer’s IP in your browser (found from the printer control panel or HP Smart).
- Navigate to Supplies > Toner Validation (if available) or firmware update.
🔄 Optional Fix: Force Firmware Reinstall
- Visit: HP Firmware Downloads
- Download the latest firmware for your exact model.
- Use the USB or network firmware tool to reinstall it manually.
- This can fix stuck validations due to internal errors.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
