I can’t get my printer to work now that the message “ printhead problem “ has come up on screen. Just changed the black ink - it is not that . I have tried shutting down . What should I do ? Is there a way for me to clean the print head ?

Hi @Susan7777,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue encountering a "Printhead problem" error message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  • Restart the Printer: You've already attempted this step, but it's worth trying again. Power off the printer completely, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and power it on.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for common issues like printhead problems. You can usually check for updates through the printer's settings menu or via the HP website.  Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
  • Inspect the Printhead: Open the printer's cover to access the printhead. Check for any visible signs of damage, such as clogs, debris, or ink residue. If you see any obstructions, carefully clean the printhead using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Gently wipe away any buildup, being careful not to apply excessive force or damage the components.
  • Run Printhead Cleaning Utility: Most printers have a built-in utility for cleaning the printhead. Refer to your printer's user manual or documentation to find instructions on how to initiate the printhead cleaning process. Running this utility may help clear any blockages or issues causing the error message.
  • Replace Printhead: If the above steps do not resolve the problem, the printhead itself may be faulty or damaged. In this case, you may need to replace the printhead assembly. Refer to your printer's documentation  HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
