Hello, all: I am trying to connect a laptop to an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I am getting a Printer Failure message: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, call HP.

I am using approved HP ink cartridges. I am not seeing any problem code. Just... an unwillingness, despite being turned on and off, to even display the typical home menu. Suggestions as to what this problem might be and how to fix it?

Hi @Richard_H_Levey ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're dealing with a generic printer failure message with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

Check Ink Cartridges and Printhead:

  • Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed. Remove them and reinsert them to make sure they are seated correctly.
  • Check the printhead for any visible damage or obstruction. Clean the printhead contacts gently with a lint-free cloth if they appear dirty.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • This can sometimes reset the printer and resolve temporary issues.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Look for any paper jams inside the printer or the paper feed area. Clear any jammed paper you find.

Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Visit the HP Support website to check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Follow the instructions to update it if necessary.

Clean Printer Contacts:

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges make contact. Be gentle to avoid damaging the components.

Perform a Printer Diagnostic:

  • Some HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools accessible from the printer's control panel. Check if your model has this feature and run any available diagnostics.

Check for Error Codes:

  • Even though you're not seeing a specific error code, ensure the display isn't showing any hidden codes or symbols that might give more insight into the problem.
