Hi @Kimmer69,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When dealing with a persistent "error state" issue with your HP LaserJet 1020 printer after running a driver update, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Restart Printer and Computer

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.Wait for about 1-2 minutes.Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Sometimes, a simple restart of your computer can resolve communication issues with the printer.

2. Check Printer Connections

  • Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer.
  • Try using a different USB port on your computer to rule out a port issue.

3. Clear Print Queue

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, scroll down to find Print Spooler.
  • Right-click on Print Spooler and select Stop.Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS.
  • Delete all files in the PRINTERS folder.Restart the Print Spooler service by right-clicking on Print Spooler in the Services window and selecting Start.

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.Right-click on your HP LaserJet 1020 printer and select Remove device.
  • Also, uninstall any HP printer software from Programs and Features.
  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your HP LaserJet 1020 printer.Ensure you select the correct operating system version.

Install Printer Drivers:

  • Run the downloaded driver installation file and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the printer drivers.
  • Connect the printer to your computer when prompted during the installation process.

5. Reset Printer:

  • A cold reset will restore the printer to its factory settings.Check your printer’s user manual or visit the HP support website for specific instructions on how to perform a cold reset for your model.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP LaserJet 1020 printer.
  • Follow the instructions provided to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
