My HP 1320 printer will not print. I get the message "Attention Required". Have tried shutting off and unplughng from wall. It did not fix the problem. I am wired to the printer, but can use a print server to print on it alsop, but the Print server will not print either.

Hi @69Alfa
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When an HP printer, like the HP LaserJet 1320, displays the message "Attention Required" and won't print, it typically points to a few common issues. Since you’ve already tried basic troubleshooting steps like turning the printer off and unplugging it, we’ll go through some additional troubleshooting techniques to help resolve the issue.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for "Attention Required" Error
1. Check for Paper Jams
One of the most common causes of the "Attention Required" message is a paper jam. Even a small piece of paper stuck inside the printer can trigger the error. Here's how to check:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Open the paper tray and toner cartridge compartment to check for any stuck paper.
- Look inside the printer’s rollers and any other areas where paper passes through.
- Remove any stuck paper gently, making sure to check thoroughly inside the printer.
2. Check the Toner Cartridge
Another potential cause for the "Attention Required" message is a problem with the toner cartridge.
- Open the printer’s front panel and remove the toner cartridge.
- Check for any visible damage to the cartridge.
- Reinstall the toner cartridge securely, ensuring it’s seated properly.
- If you have a spare toner cartridge, try replacing it to rule out a defective cartridge.
3. Check the Printer’s Status and Display Panel
The HP LaserJet 1320 has an LCD display and several status lights.
- Check the status lights and the display for any other error messages, such as low toner, paper jam, or door open.
- If a specific error code is displayed (e.g., 50.4 or 10.1), look it up in the printer’s manual for a more specific diagnosis.
- If the front door or access panels aren’t securely closed, it can trigger an "Attention Required" message, so ensure all doors are firmly shut.
4. Reset the Printer
A reset can often clear lingering errors. Here’s how to reset the printer:
- Turn off the HP LaserJet 1320.
- Unplug the power cable from the printer.
- Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute to let the printer reset itself.
- Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and check if the "Attention Required" message goes away.
5. Check the Printer Queue on Your Computer
Sometimes, the issue may be related to a stuck print job in your printer queue.
- Open your printer settings on your computer (go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers on Windows).
- Find the HP LaserJet 1320 and double-click on it to open the print queue.
- Cancel any stuck print jobs in the queue.
- Once the queue is cleared, try sending a print job again.
6. Check the Connection (Wired vs. Print Server)
You mentioned that the printer is connected wired, but also via a print server. This could be part of the issue, so let’s isolate the connection method.
Direct Connection (Wired): If you're directly connected to the printer via USB, try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable. Ensure that the cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer.
Print Server: If you're using a print server, make sure the server is properly powered on and connected to your network. Check any status lights on the print server device to see if there’s an error.
To troubleshoot the print server:
- Try printing directly from the computer to the printer (bypassing the print server).
- Ensure that the printer is properly configured on the print server and that it’s shared correctly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
