Hi,
I've followed all of the HP-Support recommended solutions for a Black Ink Cartridge that won't print at all. I've tried:

  • Cleaning the Printhead
  • Cleaning Smears
  • Remove all cartridges, hard reboot, reinstall of cartridges
  • Attempt to print from Copy menu
  • Reinstalled 6978 driver software for Mac and reconnected and tested

At one point I also had a Printhead problem error code of 0xc19a0013. The above recommended steps cleared up the error message, but not the underlying problem.

For context: my old Black Cartridge stopped printing / ran out of ink earlier this week. Initially, I replaced it with a Target-brand "official HP 902 XL" replacement, but it did not recognize it. I replaced that with the official HP 902 XL black cartridge and it accepted it.

However, after this, the the black ink did not print. Please advise on if I have a hardware problem with the printhead or something else, or if I should try additional steps.

Kind Regards,
Nils

You are right, the printhead is non-removable.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Hi @SoulP76

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

I understand you are not able to print in black. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing all the necessary troubleshooting steps.

If you have tried the steps mentioned in this document and the issue persists, I'm afraid this could either be an issue with the black ink cartridge or the printhead.

As the new HP ink cartridge is still under warranty, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options.

If you have used 2 new HP genuine black ink cartridges and the issue persists, only then we can conclude this as a hardware issue with the printhead.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar,
Thanks for your instructions on addressing my blank ink printing problem. After replacing all the color cartridges as well and the black ink with another new cartridge, and following all the steps you listed in the document, I believe I may have a bad printhead. Not sure what the next steps should be. My understanding is the HP 6978 print head is not replaceable. But is it repairable?

Please advise on what my options are at this point.

Kind Regards,

Nils
