Hi, my HP 7440 no longer copies or prints for several months now, and I'm finally getting to fixing it.  The screen is stuck on "Printing..." or "Copying..."  I've tried a hard and factory reset and still the same issues. I also did a hardware update. Scanning is fine. I use this printer to print for work, and it would be great if there are any answers or if I can speak to anyone from support. This is likely a software issue, maybe downgrading firmware is possible? Everything was fine before I did the update. Thanks!

Hi @cnguyen913

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP 7440 printer is stuck in a state where it's constantly showing "Printing..." or "Copying..." without actually completing the tasks. Since you've already tried a factory reset, hardware update, and a reset, let's go through some additional troubleshooting steps that could help resolve the issue, especially if it started after a firmware update.

1. Check for Print Queue or Stuck Print Jobs

Sometimes, print jobs get stuck in the queue, preventing new prints from going through.

Solution:

  • Clear the Print Queue:
    1. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (or Printers & Scanners in Windows 10).
    2. Find your HP 7440 printer, right-click it, and select See what's printing.
    3. In the print queue window, select Cancel All Documents or manually cancel any stuck print jobs.
  • Restart the Print Spooler:
    1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    2. In the Services window, find and right-click on Print Spooler, then select Restart.

2. Reset Printer Settings (Again)

Since the factory reset didn’t resolve the issue, you might need to try another type of reset, such as a power cycle or a partial reset.

Solution:

  • Power Cycle the Printer:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug it from the power outlet and wait for at least 60 seconds.
    3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Partial Reset: If available, perform a partial reset from the printer’s menu:
    1. Go to the Settings or Tools menu on your printer.
    2. Look for Restore Defaults or Reset Network Settings and follow the instructions.

3. Check for Firmware Issues

You mentioned that the issue started after a firmware update. It's possible that the update caused a problem. While downgrading firmware isn’t always easy, it’s worth checking if there's a way to revert or if there's a more recent update that fixes the issue.

Solution:

  • Check HP Support for a Firmware Rollback:
    1. Visit the HP Support website for your HP 7440 model.
    2. Check for any firmware rollback options or updates that might address your issue.
    3. You can also contact HP Support directly to ask if a rollback is possible.
  • Reinstall the Printer Driver: A corrupted printer driver can sometimes cause printing issues. Try reinstalling the printer drivers:
    1. Uninstall the current printer driver from your computer (through Control Panel > Devices and Printers).
    2. Download the latest driver for your HP 7440 from HP’s official website.
    3. Install the driver and try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
