I have two HP Oficejet Pro 8610's and one 8600 in my small office. The new batch of genuine HP 950 black ink will not be accepted by any of the printers. All the software and drivers are up to date and I've restarted, unplugged, etc and tried all the obvious solutions. I think this is a problem caused by HP propietary software. The numbering system for the ink seems to have changed. Any suggestions or anyone else having this problem and had a solution? I've seen other similar posts.

What is the error message when you install a cartridge? What countrry are you in? What cartridges are you using - the 950-Z10, Z20, Z30 or Z40?
Please print a Printer Status Report as follows (for the Officejet Pro 8600, the 8610 should be similar): touch the front panel, tough the right arrow , Setup, touch Down, Reports, Printer Status Report. Please report the results on lines 6, 42 and 43.

The error message I get on all three printers: a triangle with a yellow exclamation mark followed by 'Incompatible in cartridges' followed by 'The following cartridges are not intended for use in this printer' with a 'K' inside a circle.
I am in Arizona, USA.
One printer is new and the cartridge depleted is a CN049A with no 'Z'#, think it was still the set-up cartridge.
The other depleted cartridge is a CN045AE, Z 20.
The report for the 8600 and 8610 reads:
Line6: Printer Zone (PX): 4
Line 42: USE: 0 0 0 0
Line 43: HP: 1 1 1 1
The new cartidges that won't be accepted are CN045AN, Z10, two bought at Amazon (where I usually buy) and two from local Walmart as I needed them right away and originally suspected the ones bought from Amazon were possibly conterfeit.
At a loss at this point..

OK, here is the issue: the original cartridges for the 8600 series were the 950 and 951 and were usable worldwide. Recently (about January 2017) HP added regionalization for the cartridges, with z10, z20 z30 and z40 versions. The US uses the z10 cartridges.
The problem happens when the first -zXX cartridge is installed. After some usage the printer will "lock" itself to that series, and it will then reject all the others. At this point your printers are locked to the z20 region, while the US now uses the z10 cartridges.
To correct this you will need to Contact HP to request a "Regionalization Reset". There should not be any charge for this, it is covered as part of the cartridge warranty. You will need to have access to your computer and printer while on the line with HP. You will also need to have a set of cartridges for the new region, once the reset is complete cartridges from the original region will no longer work (but the "old" cartridges with no -Z suffix should still be fine). HP's web page on the subject is here.
If you have issues getting the reset done after contacting HP Support please post back here.

I have the same issue. I bought an 8630 at Officemax. I purchased some CN0XXAE cartridges from Amazon (which are for Europe). The printer is locked to the european type (which I can't buy here) Look for a regionalization reset. I haven't tried it yet. Have to call HP support.

HARD PLACE! I wonder what country Z20 cartridges are from ? If I can find that out, I can just call a store in that country since HP won’t help!!

@rapunzzzl - I mentioned before, I have asked to have HP escalate this issue. It will take a few days (typically four working days) to work its way through the system. Likely an HP representative will contact you through the private message system asking for contact information and some other information.
The Z20 cartridges are not sold in the US, and it would not be in your best interest to find a supplier in Russia, Europe, the Middle East or Africa. A better (and faster) option would be to purchase a set of 951 Z10 cartridges in the US and have your printer reset to accept them. While this may take a few days it will be a much better solution in the long run.
Yes, there are many folks posting in the forum with this issue. It will not help to post your issue in multiple threads, as some of the threads you posted to are for an entirely different issue. The issue you are having is with regionalization, it has nothing to do with "ink system failure" or the firmware changes that temporarily blocked third party cartridges.
I have already asked to have your case escalated.
