Officejet 8720

My 8720 replaced a 4630 and is connected the same way- wireless thru a DSL modem/router.  Printing from wireless clients (laptop, phones) is extremely slow.  Running a continuous ping to the printer shows high latency, jitter, and timeouts (15-45 ms).  Getting into the management interface is also very slow.  The wireless network is almost idle.  The printer has the latest firmware on it and I ran the print/scan doctor after installing the drivers on the client laptop.  My desktop system which is connected via USB works fine.  There is a DHCP permanent reservation in the router for the printer.

Sooooo - I ran an ethernet cable from the printer to the modem (which disables the wireless interface in the printer) and now everything works great.  Is this the recommended fix?
