Tried to install a new yellow cartridge. Pulled one from a new HP box and inserted but printer confirmed it was an authentic HP cartridge, then said cartridge is older generation but won't work with my printer. It looks identical to the one that was empty. Only difference was "warranty ends 2020/01" vs "warranty ends 2020/03" for the one that was empty. They are the very same housing, connection points, etc. I can hear the ink in the new (rejected) cartridge.  Obviously this is an HP attempt to time limit the usability of their cartridges.  

Printer "cartridge protection" is set to "OFF"

what other setting is there to avoid this problem?

I understand you are not able to use the new replacement yellow ink cartridge due to this error. To assist you better,

If this is a genuine HP ink cartridge, I would need some information related to the ink cartridges and the printer which cannot be shared on a public post for security reasons.
