HPCE9173 (HP Envy Inspire 7200 Series) Cartridge is not communicating with printer.

I only use HP ink cartridge, 64XL for the black cartridge.  I print appx 38 pages/monthly.

Recently, I got the error message referenced above.  While the cartridge was not that old, I removed it, cleaned the surfaces on the cartridge and in the printer, and installed a fresh 64XL.

Still got the same error message.  Followed all the suggestions, (remove power, clean contacts, etc.) and nothing has worked.

What now?

@RocketRancher, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Cartridge not communicating with the printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since you've already tried cleaning the contacts, power cycling, and replacing the cartridge with a new HP 64XL, here are some additional troubleshooting steps:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Confirm that the HP 64XL you purchased is genuine and not counterfeit.
  • Ensure that the cartridge is not expired. Expired cartridges may cause communication errors.
  • Verify that you're using the correct region-coded cartridge (some HP cartridges are region-locked).

2. Reset the Printer

  1. With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  2. Unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall and then the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and check if the issue is resolved.

3. Update Printer Firmware

  • Outdated firmware may cause cartridge recognition issues.
  • Download the latest firmware for your HP ENVY Inspire 7255e from the HP Support website.

4. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from HP’s website.
  • It can detect and attempt to fix cartridge-related issues automatically.

5. Clean the Cartridge Contacts Again (Advanced Method)

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridge and gently clean the copper contacts (not the nozzles) with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let it dry completely before reinserting.
  • Repeat for the printer’s contact points.

6. Check for Blocked Vents

  • Make sure the cartridge's vent (a small hole on top) is not blocked by tape or debris.
  • If necessary, gently clean the vent with a pin.

7. Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another HP 64 or 64XL cartridge.
  • If a different cartridge works, the issue may be with the specific cartridge you installed.

We hope our assistance has been helpful!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

I do appreciate everyone's suggestions but I had already tried most of them and none of the other worked. Called and spoke to a HP tech for over an hour and we could not resolve this issue. I have not seen any post where this problem was resolved. I bought a new printer yesterday. Had to download a new driver before I could complete that setup. I've been a loyal HP customer for 30 yrs and if these two incidents is any indication of what's to come, I may not stick with HP.

@RocketRancher, I understand your frustration. It's incredibly disappointing when a product you've relied on for so long suddenly gives you trouble, especially when troubleshooting doesn't seem to work. Ideally, we would replace the cartridge if none of the suggested steps helped!

We truly value your loyalty to HP over the past 30 years, and it's disheartening to hear that you're considering switching brands. We strive to provide our customers with the best possible experience, While we can't undo the inconvenience you've experienced, we want to assure you that we're committed to improving our products and services.

We truly appreciate your feedback and hope you'll continue to be a part of the HP family.
