Newly bought NW178.  MFP can make copies.  But it won't print. On my laptop I can see in the overview of pending documents that the door is open.  It's not. And if so, why can it make copies. Should also be a problem.  So far: 1 copy, 0 prints with a brand new MFP.  How should I proceed to get the MFP started.

Hi @Steven_be,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw is recognizing the printer's door as being open when it’s not, preventing it from printing while allowing copying. This can happen due to a sensor issue or communication error between the printer and your computer.

Here's how you can troubleshoot this problem:

Steps to Troubleshoot:

Ensure the Door is Fully Closed:

  • Double-check that all doors (front and back) and trays are fully closed and latched properly.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes a simple restart clears errors.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Visit the HP support website and download the latest firmware for your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw. Installing updated firmware can resolve many hardware communication issues.

Check Printer Status on Windows:

  • Open Devices and Printers (in the Windows Control Panel), find your printer, and see if there’s a status message like "Door open." If the printer still thinks the door is open, this could confirm a sensor issue.

Reinstall the Printer Driver:

  • Uninstall the printer software from your computer:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall a Program.
    2. Find the HP printer driver and uninstall it.
  • Download and reinstall the latest driver for your model from the HP website.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any printing issues. This tool can automatically fix printer-related errors, including the false "door open" warning.

Check Printer's Control Panel:

  • Use the printer’s control panel to print a test page. This will help you verify if the issue is computer-related or with the printer itself.

Factory Reset (if needed):

  • If none of the above steps work, perform a factory reset on the printer. This can sometimes clear persistent errors.
    1. Go to the printer's control panel.
    2. Navigate to Settings > System Setup > Restore Factory Defaults.
    3. Confirm the reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
