It's no mystery unfortunately.
This page now has a useful selection of firmware for different printers: https://www.ghost-white-toner.com/firmware-update-warning/

@Mike10500... I have confirmed that this works for me.
Not knowing the specifics of the update of the firmware I am not sure why your workaround worked. While I am very appreciative of this solution this does to relieve HP of the harm they have bestowed upon their customers.
IP4 to IP6 moved from 32 bit to 128 bit addressing. One of the benefits of IP6 is enhanced security. I am providing a link for those interested.
With great appreciation... I will continue to investigate and test and provide any additional information I can. Those operating an enterprise or are administrators, be cautious with your changes as you may not what impact you may have on your networks and/or applications.

Rossco,
Yes still an .exe file. I have not yet been able to complete the ftp fix because of the network issue. I will try today. You may also want to pursue the WineBottler suggestion earlier in this thread to create a dmg file from the exe that seems to be readily available. I have not been successful in this regard to this point.
I will provide any additional information if I have success. The deactivation of IP6 was a definite workaround for me, but keep in mind I do have genuine HP cartridges so I cannot confirm if this a requirement for the successful use of this work around.

@Rossco1978 Have you tried to or are able to do firmware update using the USB drive method? Link for HP how-to video
This method would be OS independent like the ftp method but does not require network access at all.

Thanks... I add this to my list to try. I have not watched the video yet, however, if a assume (I know I should not :-)) I still need the firmware file for a mac. I have yet to identify an older version of the file.
