Hello
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw indicated "Jam in tray 1" There's no paper jam. I have heard it may be a worn out pick up roller.
Is it possible to pick up one, get instructions to replace and fix myself?

Hi @Mikee1224,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, it’s possible to replace the pickup roller yourself, and it’s a common solution for issues like paper jams when no actual paper is present. Here’s a general guide on how to do it.
Steps to Replace the Pickup Roller:
Purchase a Replacement Roller:
- You can purchase a pickup roller kit for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw from various online retailers or HP's official parts store. Make sure to get the correct model specific to your printer.
Prepare Your Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Open the front door and remove the toner cartridges and drum assembly. Place them on a clean, flat surface.
Locate the Pickup Roller:
- The pickup roller is usually located in Tray 1 (the input tray) or in the area where you removed the drum assembly.
- Refer to your printer's manual or HP’s online resources to locate the exact position of the pickup roller in your model.
Remove the Old Pickup Roller:
- The pickup roller is typically held in place by clips or screws. Gently release these fasteners to remove the roller.
- Be cautious and handle components gently to avoid damage.
Install the New Pickup Roller:
- Align the new pickup roller with the mounting slots or clips.
- Secure it in place by reversing the removal process. Ensure that it is firmly in place.
Reassemble the Printer:
- Reinsert the drum assembly and toner cartridges.
- Close the front door.
Test the Printer:
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Load some paper into Tray 1 and run a test print to ensure that the issue is resolved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
