@GaStow, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw paper tray won’t slide back in, it’s often due to a misalignment or obstruction. Here are some steps to help you resolve the issue:

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for safety.

Remove the paper tray completely:

  • Gently pull the tray out until it stops.
  • Lift slightly and pull it out fully.

Check for obstructions:

  • Look inside the tray slot and the tray itself for any jammed paper, labels, or debris.
  • Also check if any paper guides are sticking out or misaligned.

Inspect the paper guides:

  • Ensure the length and width guides in the tray are properly aligned with the paper size.
  • Misaligned guides can prevent the tray from sliding in.

Check for overfilled tray:

  • Make sure the paper stack is below the maximum fill line.
  • Remove excess paper if needed.

Reinsert the tray:

  • Align the tray with the rails and gently push it in.
  • If it resists, don’t force it, double-check for alignment or obstructions.

Power on the printer and test.
