Answers DO NOT help!  HP should be putting something within ALL their Printers to protect us from Invaders!  I have a brand new [2 mos old] computer I just bought because my other one had problems too.  {in fact this printer replaces another with a problem} and I now see these things are ALL related.  HP chat box pops up...looked official, asks permission to check my printer, I say yes....he pokes around and says there is nothing wrong with your printer.  Actually I had done the same thing and got the same response.  He then asks would  you like me to check your computer.  Find out he wants my permission to remotely look at it.  I told him that about 2 weeks to a month ago I had a similar incident where someone wanted to remotely view...I said No.  That is what I told him.  But the Chat Box, looked so official I agreed.   Oh, I believe it is here where he said he needed my telephone number to call me and walk me through it.  He then began to go through different parts of my computer and then started to matter of factly show me that several of my drivers were off.  All the while he was professional, couteous and VERY "patient."  As he went on, his voice began to change to one of "oh my god" and this is how it went.  Also there was a flash of a DELL product selling for over $2000 and this is how it went.  He then asked me do you want me to FIX it and this is where things started to get suspicious.  I was on the telephone with him for quite some time.  He started to walk me through offers to protect me, I said I could not afford it.  Then I felt pressure starting to build as he asked me how much COULD I afford?  To make this longer story short, I said I had to talk to my Son and could not make a decision w/o his advice.  That he was not at home and asked him for his name and telephone number which he gave me (815)-322-1441 X2024 name: Samuel Bernar (he had an Indian accent).  I asked him what was he located he said California.  I told him I would call him back as soon as my Son got back.  He also told me that there was probably nothing wrong with my older computer.  Hmmm I thought, this is really not making sense, while also making sense the wrong way.  He told me my problem was related to my IP address and encryption.  He would give firewall security,  IP address protection and so on.  After I hung up, I blocked his telephone number and also noticed there was a telephone number in my missed calls that had just a name, like Amazon and no number and I could not block it as it was.  I also was able to go into my computer and put check mark in the box (which was currently unchecked) so people could NOT have remote access to my computer.  After this, I tried to print something and it was fine.  I have been shutting off my PRINTER unless I have to use it and then I shut it right off again.  I do the same with my computer, whenever I am done with whatever I am doing, I just shut it off. So, this has been my experience.  My question is below - but I think that access to my computer actually has to come through my PRINTER.  So isn't there a way HP can build some type of protection into any and ALL your BRAND hp printers?  Please take the telephone number I have provided and report this as a "source" for unlawful intent.  The name probably is fictitious.  He definitely wanted access to my bank account and/or CC card Info.  This could have been very, very bad IF I had not been "cautious" or "wary" of this Individual.

@EnglishIvory, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

First, I want to sincerely apologize for the experience you've had — that sounds incredibly unsettling, and you were absolutely right to be cautious and trust your instincts. Thank you for sharing the details so thoroughly; it’s clear you acted with care and awareness.

Please know that HP will never ask for remote access unless you've specifically contacted our official support channels, and even then, it's always done through secure, verified platforms. We also do not request payments or personal financial info during support interactions unless you are purchasing a product or extended service directly through our official HP store.

You're absolutely right to wonder about printer security — we do take it seriously. Most HP printers, including your DeskJet 2723e, come with HP+ and Smart Security features built in, but users must remain vigilant. Cybercriminals often imitate official support windows or calls to gain remote access, and printers can sometimes be used as an access point if the network isn't secure.

That said, I want to help you with the real issue you're facing now. Could you please let me know what your current concern with the printer is? For example:

Are you having trouble printing?

Is it not connecting to Wi-Fi?

Are you seeing any error messages?

Let’s walk through some troubleshooting steps together to get you back on track, and also make sure your system is secure.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
