Hello from Greece,
I'm having this problem with my HP 4535 printer. After un/re-installing the half empty colour cartridge and having performed various actions (like: hard reset by powering off the device while in operation for 20 secs, factory reset etc) there's a new situation now... The printer does not recognize the colour cartridge anymore (as an HP original cartridge) marking it with an "X" and the HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.0.5 I'm using was finding the printer at a wrong IP address. After several attemps it looks like it finally "saw" the printer and although it establishes connection with it, it cannot set the printer as the DEFAULT Windows printer.
I have tried unstalling and re-installing the printer driver, but still the printer cannot be set as the DEFAULT Windows printer (in original MS-Windows 7 Pro 64bit HP computer that I'm using).
The only thing I haven't done so far is try a new colour cartridge.
Please advise on how to solve this case.
Best regards
Costas

I suggest you do a Hard Reset on the printer and update the firmware for the printer using the USB.
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Restart the printer.
Refer to this document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-4530-all-in-one-printer-series/5447926... for Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues.
If the issue persists, I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:
Remove the USB if connected
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-4530-all-in-one-printer-se... to download and install the Full Feature Software and Drivers.
