Hello, I need help with an ink cartridge compatibility error.

Printer: HP Deskjet 1000 J110 series (purchased in Brazil)
Operating System: Windows 11
Country: Brazil
Black cartridge: HP 122 (CH561H) Black (recognized correctly as Original HP)
Color cartridges tested: HP 122 (CH562H) Tri-color and HP 122XL (CH564H) Tri-color (both Original HP)
Error message: “HP Tri-color” (The cartridges listed above were not made for use in this printer, as currently configured).

What happens:
Any print job (test page or documents) stays in the queue and the printer shows “Requires attention”. Printing is blocked and the incompatible tri-color cartridge window pops up.

What I tried (same results):

  1. Tested two different genuine color cartridges: HP 122 Tri-color and HP 122XL Tri-color

  2. Removed/reseated cartridges and confirmed protective tape removed

  3. Cleaned the copper contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer

  4. Power reset (unplugged from wall for 60 seconds)

  5. Cleared the Windows print queue and retried

Question:
Since the black HP 122 is accepted as original, but any genuine tri-color (122/122XL) is rejected as incompatible, could this be a regionalization/firmware cartridge lock or a hardware issue with the tri-color cartridge contacts/carriage? What is the recommended fix (regionalization reset or service)?

Thanks.

Hi @luisjvelizm,

I understand your HP DeskJet 1000 J110 (purchased in Brazil) is rejecting genuine HP 122/122XL tri-color cartridges with an “incompatible cartridge” error, while the black HP 122 is recognized correctly. Let’s go through a few points and steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm cartridge region compatibility
HP cartridges are sometimes region-locked.
A black HP 122 may work, but tri-color cartridges sold in a different region may be blocked by firmware, causing the “incompatible” error.

Inspect the tri-color cartridge contacts
Remove the tri-color cartridge and check the copper contacts for dirt or residue.
Gently clean with a lint-free cloth and distilled water; even small smudges can cause recognition issues.

Reseat the cartridges properly
Ensure the cartridge clicks fully into the slot and the carriage moves freely.
Incorrect seating can trigger compatibility errors, though usually only for one side (color vs. black).

Power cycle the printer
Turn off the printer, unplug it for at least 60 seconds, then power it back on.
This can refresh firmware recognition of the cartridges.

Check for firmware updates
Sometimes HP releases updates that enforce cartridge region locks.
Check the HP support site for your model and region to see if a firmware update is available; note that updating firmware may lock out out-of-region cartridges permanently.

Try a different genuine tri-color cartridge (same region)
If possible, obtain a tri-color cartridge sold in Brazil for HP 122.
If it works, this confirms a region lock issue rather than hardware failure.

Reset the printer to factory defaults
Use the printer control panel or HP Smart to restore factory defaults.
This can sometimes resolve false incompatibility errors if firmware misread the cartridge.

I hope this helps.
